▣ You can turn off the Tonight Show now

posted by Richard Rife on April 27th, 2010 at 10:57 PM

As many of you know, humor is an important value in my life. I like to laugh. I like a good joke. I like to see the humor in life. I like a good turn of a phrase.

And so, I like Jay Leno. I think he's a good person. And I think he's funny. There's an art in stand-up comedy, and he's surely world class at it. I don't watch the Tonight Show every night, but I like to catch the monologue (and maybe the post-monologue comedy bit) once or twice a week.

To be honest, I liked Jay better years ago when his material was less sexually oriented. In fact, these days I really like Brian Regan, who I find hiliariously funny, as he makes fun of real life without being dirty at all.

Still, I like the monologue and the comedy bit, but after that, I'm done.

The other night I walked into the bedroom after the monologue when Jay was interviewing a celebrity, a pop culture phenomenon, whom I had never seen or heard of in my entire life. Janet said "Do you want to watch this?" My answer was a quick no. I really don't care to listen to the moronic musings of a Hollywood star whom I've never heard of before. For that matter, I don't care to listen to the moronic musings of a Hollywood star I've heard of before. Okay, if Sandra Bullock is on, I'd be interested, but that's where I draw the line.

It is nice to know you draw the line some place.
