▣ Great and Spacious Building

posted by Richard Rife on April 26th, 2010 at 3:34 PM

I generally don't attend General Conference in the Conference Center. I usually take it in in the comfort of my own home, seated on my comfortable sofa, with a diet soda nearby. However, once, after returning from our mission in Korea, our family did attend conference in SLC.

Prior to going, my wife reminded me that I was a returned mission president and that I should set a good example by not counter-heckling the protestors on the streets near the Conference Center. It was hard, but I did a good job of complying with her instructions. I must admit, though, that I laughed when I saw someone (no doubt, one of our guys) standing right next to a protestor carrying a sign pointing to the protestor that said "I'm with stupid."

Yesterday, in priest quorum meeting, one of our bright and thoughtful priests pointed out the irony of the situation with the protestors outside the Conference Center. He said: "In the Book of Mormon, the good people are wending their way toward the tree of life when they are mocked and made fun of by people in the Great and Spacious Building. But in our day, in Salt Lake, the people in the Great and Spacious Building are mocked and made fun of by a small number of people outside the building.

I'd never thought of it that way before, but he made a great point. Ironic, really.

Richard Parsons says:

That is a new thought about the great and spacious building. Leave it to the youth to come up with such comments.
