▣ Purpose of Scripture Study

posted by Richard Rife on November 27th, 2009 at 11:29 PM

President Hinckley said: "For me, the reading of the scriptures is not the pursuit of scholarship. Rather, it is a love affair with the word of the Lord and that of His prophets." (Gordon B. Hinckley, The New Era, June 1995, 6-8)

My thought, when I first read this is that, in my case, I would phrase it this way:

RCR version: "For me, the reading of the scriptures is not the pursuit of scholarship; rather, it is the pursuit of discipleship. I read the scriptures each day in order to learn how to be a better disciple and to be inspired to be a better disciple, not to be a scholar."

I hope someday I can feel that same intensity for the scriptures as President Hinckley!

I have to agree with your dear wife. That is a beautiful thought. I've always felt bad that I wasn't a scholar of the scriptures but I do love to read them and they help remind me to be a better person when I do read them.
