▣ Jon & Kate Plus Eight

posted by Richard Rife on January 20th, 2009 at 2:08 PM

I never cease to be amazed by what you can see on TV these days. When I was a kid, we had three television stations, CBS, NBC, and ABC. Oh, I think there might have been a PBS-like station, but I never watched it. The options were limited.

Nowadays, with the proliferation of cable TV stations, it’s just fascinating what makes the airwaves.

Enter the TLC reality show “Jon & Kate Plus Eight,” which chronicles the exploits of Jon and Kate Gosselin, their eight-year-old twin girls, and their sextuplets, three girls and three boys, age four and a half.

Raising such a family is a major feat; the parents are really nice people; the kids are cute in an “all children are cute” sort of way; but somehow the show manages to elevate the term “uninteresting” to a totally new level.

How do I know this? I inadvertently see snippets of Jon & Kate when I enter a room in which my wife is working. Just yesterday, Jon & Kate were installing shelves in their garage, while their children looked on, bothering them. Another time, Jon cooked breakfast while the kids got in his way. I’ve got my fingers crossed that sometime in the future I’ll get to see Kate vacuum the carpet or Jon mow the lawn, while, of course, the kids cause irritation.

Jon & Kate are nice people doing a good thing, but honestly I don’t want to watch it happen. Please don’t make me watch it happen. When I see it, it’s like scratching my fingers on a chalkboard. I want to hang myself, like the people in the movie “Airplane.” I would prefer being drawn and quartered, after the hanging. (Okay, it’s not that bad, but you get the point.)

Years ago, my wife wanted to share Star Trek the Next Generation with my mom. She asked Nanna to sit on the sofa with her and watch an episode. Janet is enamored of Patrick Stewart/Jean Luc Picard. At the end of the episode, Janet was expecting Nanna to say “that was really good;” or “I can see why you like that show.” Nanna’s response: “Well, you can’t help what you like.”

It’s a true principle: you can’t help what you like. I know there are some wonderful women (like Janet) who love “Jon & Kate Plus Eight.” And they can’t help what they like. Just don’t make me watch it, please!

What time is “24” on, anyway?

That post made me laugh - and I agree somewhat. But I do love Jon & Kate:) And I am definitely a sucker for The Bachelor and Top Model.

very funny and oh so true! My least favorite is the bachelor or top model. It disgust me to even think they put this type of stuff on tv. My kids wonder why I don't watch television.
